THE MOULTING CYCLE

Moulting in prawns is a critical process where they shed their old exoskeleton to grow a new, larger one. This process, known as ecdysis, occurs periodically and is essential for their growth and development. The moult cycle includes several stages: post-moult, inter-moult, pre-moult, and the actual moult. During moulting, prawns are vulnerable as their new exoskeleton is soft and takes time to harden. Environmental factors, such as water quality, play a significant role in successful moulting. This process also influences their behavior, making them more reclusive and less active until their new shell hardens.

Minerals play a crucial role in the moulting process of prawns. Key minerals like calcium (Ca) and magnesium (Mg) are essential for the formation of a new exoskeleton. Calcium is particularly important for hardening the new shell, while magnesium helps in the overall moulting process. The balance of sodium (Na) and potassium (K) is also vital for maintaining proper physiological functions during moulting.

Additionally, prawns absorb these minerals from their environment through their gills and from their diet. Ensuring the right mineral balance in their habitat can significantly improve their growth and survival rates
